BENGALURU CLIMATE ACTION AND RESILIENCE PLAN

Bengaluru’s first Climate Action and Resilience Plan (BCAP) was launched on 27 November 2023 under the leadership of the Administrator, Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), the Additional Chief Secretary, Urban Development Department, Government of Karnataka (GoK), and the Chief Commissioner, GBA. With this milestone, Bengaluru became the third city in India to adopt a climate action plan under the C40 Cities Network. BCAP aims to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions while strengthening the city’s adaptation and resilience to climate change hazards through a collaborative, multi-stakeholder approach. The plan is designed to deliver inclusive and equitable outcomes for Bengaluru’s citizens. To achieve these goals, BCAP outlines short, medium, and long-term strategies across seven key sectors, developed in consultation with relevant stakeholder agencies. Beyond advancing mitigation and resilience objectives, the implementation of BCAP is expected to generate significant co-benefits, including enhanced urban livability, improved public health, expanded green job opportunities, and strengthened social equity through reduced climate risk and vulnerability.

ABOUT THE BENGALURU CLIMATE ACTION CELL

To advance climate action and resilience initiatives in the city, the Climate Action Cell (CAC) has been constituted by the Hon’ble Chief Commissioner of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), vide Order No. CE/PR/216/2023–24 dated 01/02/2024. The Bengaluru Climate Action Plan (BCAP) serves as the guiding framework for this multi-stakeholder initiative. The Cell functions under the chairpersonship of the Special Commissioner, Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Management Wing, GBA, Shri Ramachandran R., IAS, with representation from all relevant stakeholder departments.

Role of the Bengaluru Climate Action Cell :

Hold meetings and ensure regular stakeholder coordination to support timely progress on actions outlined in the BCAP
Help in aligning/strengthening projects and activities in the identified sectors with BCAP actions
Facilitate coordination of priority projects and initiatives aligned with BCAP objectives
Organize events to build capacities of stakeholders, convene discussions and generate awareness on BCAP
Monitor, Evaluate and Report the city’s progress on implementing BCAP actions, goals and targets
